Dr. Nicholas Dylan Ray is Economic Advisor to an Arabian Gulf family office. Previously he was Chief Investment Officer of Investment Enterprises Ltd, and co-founder of its Vision Capital subsidiary, an advisory firm serving Arabian Gulf clients. Prior to starting Vision Capital in 1996, Ray worked as a consultant with the Paris office of The Boston Consulting Group, specializing in mergers and acquisitions for large multinationals, and also consulted for Arthur D. Little and Abt Associates.
Nicholas Dylan Ray has a Ph. D. and a Masters in International Affairs from The Fletcher School (Tufts and Harvard Universities), where he won both the First Year and the Second Year Prizes. He has published a book entitled Arab Islamic Banking and the Renewal of Islamic Law, based on research done under two Fulbright Scholarships in Egypt, and has studied Islamic law at Dar al-'Ulum in Cairo. He has also published articles and delivered talks at international conferences. Additionally, Ray studied towards a doctorate in the History of Science at Harvard and has an MA in Linguistics and a BA in Mathematics and French. He is bilingual in English and French, and speaks and reads Arabic at an advanced level, and Spanish at an intermediate level.
Starting in 2014, Ray reduced his professional responsibilities and began a second career as a writer. His first non-academic book, That Untravell'd World: Seven Journeys Through Turkey, about his physical and intellectual peregrinations through Turkey, was published in Europe in April 2019, with an American edition coming in the fall. Nicholas Dylan Ray lives in a rural setting in the south of France with his family, and enjoys adventure travel, mountain sports, martial arts, and fine wine. He was short-listed for the 2020 Lonely Planet Debut Travel Writer of the Year award.
